SSA is the Associate Law Firm to SAFREP, the South African Franchisee Association, and dedicates a department of the Law Firm to assisting Franchisees with the legal challenges they face.
The law firm was founded by Grant Seton-Smith, an attorney who resumed his career in law after more than a decade in business, which saw him earn his stripes in retail, manufacturing and sales before settling into marketing and franchise management.

Grant Seton-Smith
Founding Partner
Grant is the founder of Seton-Smith and Associates. He obtained his BProc degree from the University of Port Elizabeth and was admitted as an attorney in 1998. Grant resumed his career in law after more than a decade in business, which saw him earn his stripes in retail, manufacturing and sales before settling into marketing and franchise management. He specialises in Consumer and Franchise law with a focus on the legal challenges faced by franchisees.
Tracey Swanepoel
Director – Head of Litigation
Tracey obtained her LLB degree at the University of Johannesburg and holds a Diploma in Cyber Law. She was admitted as an attorney in 2008. After relocating to Cape Town, she joined Seton-Smith and Associates in 2015 and became a Director in 2017. Tracey heads the firm’s litigation department and specialises in commercial and general litigation.
Gert Brink
Attorney
Gert Brink obtained his LLB Degree from the University of Pretoria in 2014 and was admitted in 2015 as an Attorney. Alongside experience in practice management and business advisory obtained as Managing Partner in Brink and van Straaten Attorneys from 2018, and subsequently as sole practitioner in 2022 in Brink Attorneys, Gert Brink has developed a specialisation in general business law (Commercial, Employer and Corporate – needs) and negotiations. Seton-Smith and Associates acquired Brink Attorneys in 2024, where Gert Brink now heads the firm’s Gauteng branch situated in Greenstone Hill, Edenvale.
Nathan Seton-Smith
Candidate Attorney
Nathan Seton-Smith obtained his LLB Degree from Nelson Mandela University in 2024 and is currently the firm’s Candidate Attorney and is completing his articles.
Kim Botha
Legal Secretary
Kim has been a legal secretary for over 15 years. She has completed numerous courses in bookkeeping, general litigation and conveyancing, and has experience in both litigation and conveyancing. Kim joined the Firm in October 2017.
Ansa Ferreira
Consultant
Ansa obtained her LLB degree from the University of Pretoria in 2012. She was admitted as an attorney in 2015 and as a Conveyancer in 2019. She joined Seton-Smith and Associates in 2019 after gaining more than seven years’ extensive experience in the Conveyancing, Property and Estate Planning Law fields. She also specialises in various commercial disputes with fuel retailers and franchisees and assists with labour law matters.
